I asked my Dad earlier today in an e-mail to share what his favorite memory was from his time in the service (Korean War, stationed in Northern Japan, didn't see combat, did radio-related stuff), and he replied that it was, of course, getting to travel to and learn about Japan, and the things he saw there.

He brought back an appreciation for things Japanese that definitely influenced his subsequent artwork (he worked as an Art teacher before his retirement, and of course is an artist still).

My Dad was in the Navy during World War 2 and went to Japan after they surrendered. He was the boat's (he was on a ship that wasn't big enough to be called a ship for the Navy) radioman. He dosen't talk much about the war except for the stuff after the war, like going to China. He only mentioned once where his boat had to recover the dead after a battle.

I'm proud of my Dad and glad he's still with us.
