...those moments when someone harrasses you just a bit ("You waiting for the bus?" Then, "Hey, you could be single!" as you give them a suspicious look, then, as you move a bit away, "Don't let me scare you."), just enough to confirm that yes, their sudden regard has set off your defenses, whereapon they withdraw, having accomplished their goal - of reminding you that you are prey in this culture.

I prefer to think that we have targets psychically painted on us. But I know what you mean. It's the intrusiveness.

I remember my first realization of that. I was walking out of an electronics store, when someone drove in and boxed me in. He asked me if I knew where a car dealership was in spanish. I told him there was one across the street. Then he gives me this look and says "Quere cojer?" Which means "Wanna fuck?" in Spanish. I just walked away, and got in my truck, when he got out and walked up to my door. I locked it, and he asked to roll down the window. So what did I do? I put the truck in reverse and began to move back towards his truck.

I never saw a man run so fast. :D

But yeah, at that moment, I realized I wasn't just a woman, I'd become prey....
