What's Sad is the frequently-accepted reality (on the order of "Well...that's just the way it is...") that in any average group of guys hanging out, due to peer-pressure, the discourse will end up automatically dropped down to the level of the person with the lowest EQ.

Bit bizarre. I'd have expected it to be the other way around...

If it was cool to be sensitive and intelligent, the guy with the lowest ground state would try to climb up to where the other guys were.

Doesn't surprise me, really.

I think the guys with the highest EQ are protecting themselves. It goes with the same discomfort people feel with getting up and speaking in front of a crowd: appointing yourself leader, or challenging the social structure of a group, puts you in a very vulnerable position. If everyone in the group is racing to the bottom of the heap, then, chances are, individuals within that group are less likely to feel their ego is being threatened.

And it's not just guys, either. I've heard things come out of my mouth when I'm with a group of casual girl friends that I wouldn't even be thinking if I were alone, or with a real friend.
