No, the universe doesn't @#$%ing revolve around us humans...typical 'human nature' though it is, I'm uncommonly Irritated this morning by the numerous anxious witterings from the White Liberal Guilters with their ' Mother Earth's mad at us' (ie, 'punishing ' us with bad weather and earthquakes)...

When you scratch an itch, are you 'angry' at it at the time? Well, maybe you are. I suppose it's possible. But Jeebus, people...come on, get some perspective! When you bump your arm...do you apologise to the cells injured and destroyed in the bruised area?

Think 'natural consequences' instead. Live too near the sea...no longer understand the warning signs...and get whacked by stuff like Hurricanes. (Not talking here about the human economic class system Issue that was so clearly illustrated recently - that's a whole 'nother can of worms). So now we Know in a way we can't ignore. As I see it, logically: either building codes will get even more stringent...or people will stop living right on the beach.

Funny that the liberal guilters say 'Mother Earth is punishing us' and at the same time tear strips off the conservatives for saying 'God is punishing us'. Everybody loves that poetic justice angle.

Yup. We all feel like Bad Children, who deserve to Suffer...

It's getting real old.

I don't see why it's more unpleasant to think of bad things that happen as just bad things that happen. Attributing intent or meaning to it is scarier, in my book. I mean, we know that bad things happen to good people, so why do we continue to believe that we can prevent bad things from happening to us if we behave?

It's an 'EQ' thang - you honestly feel better with that much uncertainty, knowing that any kind of nasty random sh*t could happen at any moment? For most, it's an untenable position to be in, and that I understand (if not necessarily condone); I do find that 'We must be Bad, then' element especially Annoying.

I guess I figure that if God or a sentient Mother Nature has it in for me, it'll still happen in a random and unexpected way. Whether or not the guiding consciousness is there isn't going to affect the way I experience the event.

I have other reasons for being good than thinking there's a lightning bolt with my name on it.

Well given that increasingly fucked up weather can be linked to global warming which is in no sanely disputable fashion linked to us, the statement could be seen as being true.

{snark}Yeah, but not by me{/snark}

Is Natural Consequences. Perfectly, perfectly Natural.

That's sounding a little Shrubian that...

Our weekly foreign affairs show did a story tonight in the US National Guard that was entirely disturbing - 50% of the US deployment in Iraq is comprised of civillians being paid significantly less than the regular military, and supplied with woefully outdated equipment (more than 50% of which is in Iraq instead of back in the US where it might be useful relieving national disasters) and whose regular lives aren't held in any sort of security by the government.

Here in Australia, on the ground emergency disaster relief is in part largely the responsibility of the State Emergency Service, which while publically funded is staffed almost exclusively by volunteers.

I'm curious as to how the NG gets around the Posse Comitatus(?) that prohibits military deployment within America's borders.

It could be seen as metaphorically true, but not literally. Action/reaction is not the same as sin/punishment.
