Went back to ask to see the manager; duh, turns out that guy wasn't the manager after all. He said the manager wans't there; I asked when he would be. He said tommorrow, after ten.
So now that he has fair warning that I'm following up on this...he'll have time to either 're-find' the $20 bill/make up a story that he didn't understand what I was really asking when I returned the 1st time, etc...or to hold his ground (vastly more likely), and fudge the drawer counting records at the end of the night (they're open until 2:30 am). Though of course if someone merely pocketed the $20 (it was a young woman to whom I handed the $, though this fellow was there at the till as well), all they have to do is substitute a $1 bill, and their drawer will be fine.
I'm still going to follow up on this tommorrow. Even though I (DUH) only realized that I also could/should have gotten the counter guy's name when I was in there the 2nd time!! Geeze, I'm really not used to assertion/confrontation - I get so keyed up just from doing it that I don't always think of things that should be done at the time.
Even if the manager takes his employee's word over mine cos the drawer is fine, tells me there's no proof and there's nothing he can do...I'll still go down tommorrow and have my say. If nothing else, the way the counter guy handled my dismay, since this was $ related to rent payment ('It's not my problem') sucked. Very bad customer service. And if there have been any other...rumors or hints of impropriety concerning this employee...the manager will want to know of this incident. Some day it may be part of a collection of enough circumstantial evidence to help nail the bastard.
No, Justice is never guaranteed...but we sure as fuck won't get any if we don't make a reasonable effort.
