b) Just last night did a software update (Mac); two days ago when first tried to run avi file, got a 'need additional quicktime component/software' msg, downloaded something at the apple site

I've had a lot of luck with the newest version of VLC for Mac. Have you tried that one? It's the only player I ever found that reliably played back AVIs on a Mac.
