They choppy and image disconnected with audio. Even though from reputable poster on mininova. Whether played on Quicktime or DiVX player.

Yeah. But I even got a diff. copy of one from another poster - same issue.

Are you running additional programs in the background? Have you updated your player recently? Are the files on your hard drive or playing off a disc?

a) no

b) Just last night did a software update (Mac); two days ago when first tried to run avi file, got a 'need additional quicktime component/software' msg, downloaded something at the apple site

I've had a lot of luck with the newest version of VLC for Mac. Have you tried that one? It's the only player I ever found that reliably played back AVIs on a Mac.
