Road-tripping with a few people in an unfamiliar place. Was also some walking around, seeing unfamiliar houses, etc., though seemed to start from part of the land where I grew up but which then seemed to have features it doesn't in real life. At one point, I ducked/crawled under some bushes to avoid being seen by someone who was nearby (he might have felt 'dangerous', though I may have just been over-cautious). During the driving around, felt as if I were on the way back to the place I work (though, again, the scenery wasn't 'familiar'). One of the people in the car 'felt' like my ex narcissistic boss (though I didn't feel threatened or upset per se). Saw in the distance an 'old mansion' that apparently no one lived in, and I wondered idly if it would ever be brought back to life.
The idea that behind a personality that's in misery might be a perfectly contented soul* that's doing exactly what it wants (or even needs to).
For example, might even seem to ask for help (but end up not actually taking advantage of it or following through).
In which case, it oughtn't be interfered with.
Now, regarding the question of how you can quickly tell the difference so that you don't waste your own time and energy....ain't quite there yet.
Not always sure of how I feel about this concept, mind...though I first started thinking about it as my mother neared her death earlier this summer, as I thought back to the past 5 years of her illness and how she chose to handle it.
* Some schools of thought question that all souls are at the same level and that all bodies even have a 'soul' as commonly defined (for example, might be very vestigial; might need a lot of growth before it's considered a 'proper' soul), but other than bring that to the reader's attention, that's beyond the scope of this post.
