What was the 1st music you ever bought for yourself (whether vinyl or tape or CD or mp3)?

What year was this?

Where did you buy it?

My answer:

1st record: Not 100% sure - might have been the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack, very early '80s. Bit hard to remember, as I listened to a lot of my brothers' albums from a bit earlier, so the memory about what I might have had to get myself blurs. I also may have borrowed records from my High School library. I used to listen to ESB while reading Robert Ludlum novels during High School. (I also noted that the Asteroid Field track made a perfect 'Battle of Britain' soundtrack). Whatever I bought would most likely have been from a Central Massachusetts 'Strawberries' - probably the one in Auburn, MA, across from the Auburn Mall.

1st cassette tape: Hard to recall - might have been a traditional music album, like the Battlefield Band. (It also may have been tapes that my school library used to lend out instead of or in addition to records). The public library from next town over also had music to lend. This could have been as early as late '70s. Ditto for most likely place of purchase.

1st CD: Heart's 'Dreamboat Annie' album. I'd just gotten my 1st own stereo system with CD player - end of the 80s, would have been '87 or more likely '88+, when CDs had only been around for a little while. Didn't have speakers yet, so I popped it in the player and listened with earphones the day I brought the CD home. This one was definitely an upgrade from vinyl. My frustration with the constant cleaning required for vinyl - I used to tape to cassette tapes and was constantly guarding against crackles while recording - made the upgrade to CDs an easy choice. :) I don't recall where I got this - possibly the usual Strawberries. If I was already in Boston at the time (probably), could have been a Strawberries, could have been Newbury Comics...

1st mp3: Hmm, iTunes says my 1st purchase from them, back in March 2004, was 3 Bowie songs: China Girl, Panic in Detroit, & Modern Love. :)
