...I got in me a strong strain of 'wannabe hipster'.

All because I felt exceedingly Smug after getting into Good Enough to Eat, a popular Upper West Side comfort food restaurant, for Brunch yesterday morning just after 10 am after only a couple of minutes' wait, while the line suddenly built up behind me...(hint: eat outside).

Seriously, though, the 'deep south' scrambled eggs with biscuits and sausage gravy were good. There on my own, I ordered quickly, scarfed it down, and bugged out, but I needed a good breakfast to fortify me for the day's travails, and was happy to have gotten to one of the places on my 'to go to' list that I had heard recommended. My meals, with tip, averaged a little under $10 each.

This was my 3rd time in Manhattan. I took the 'Boston Deluxe' bus service (new player in the cheap fares to NYC world) to and fro. Once in town, I got around a lot more this time - subsequently getting way more stressed, exhausted and footsore than I recall from my 2 past visits. Kept getting confused as to the direction (example: Sunday morning, tried to cross Central Park by following 85th street, and ended up wandering down the western edge to Columbus Circle instead). Really made use of the map I'd bought. I'd start off for somewhere, then realize a few cross streets later that I was headed in the exact opposite direction...

The exhaustion dragged me down a bit this weekend, but I still managed to get to the 'Design for the Other 90%' exhibition I'd wanted to see (and also an Ingo Maurer exhibit) at the Cooper-Hewitt museum (the former Andrew Carnegie Mansion on Fifth Avenue!), do a bit of wandering through Greenwich Village and Soho, stop at the original Herald Square Macy's (ginormous), enjoy (if quickly) the aforementioned brunch, discover the famous Zabar's deli, stop by one of the Moma stores, and even stumble, completely accidentally, across that shop that sells only peanut butter sandwiches, located, perhaps appropriately enough, right near the Washington Square NYU campus.

I over-nighted, as usual, at the ginormous 891 Amsterdam Ave. at West 103rd Hosteling International NYC, a full city block of cheap but safe accommodation (in my case, a mere $25!).

So there you have it: Cheap but satisfying 2-day NYC vacation, just-graduated-from-grad-school-style.
