I've always thought that war and conflict are things that happen when someone feels threatened, or someone perceives (rightly or wrongly) that there isn't enough of something to go around (land, food, water, money, etc.).
Yes, in situations where everyone has enough to eat and drink and everyone lives comfortably, there isn't much conflict. But anytime someone thinks they don't have what they're entitled to, or where one person might have to steal food from someone else's kids in order for their own kids to eat, there's going to be trouble. In that sense, conflict is a biological imperative, because it's about protecting your genetic line.
Of course, how many of the big famous wars have been started because someone just wanted to grab power that they didn't need, or bully other countries around? Large-scale conflict can have other root causes, especially when too few people have too much of the power already.
